What Great Power Has Done
Chapters 1 through 12 analyzed structures. Now, the historical record.
What has great power done? Killed soil. Killed people. Hidden the truth.
The Dust Bowl — Stripping the Great Plains of Topsoil
The 1930s. The American Midwest. The Dust Bowl was one of the greatest environmental disasters in human history.
The U.S. government promoted westward expansion → Settlers flooded the Great Plains
All grassland plowed into wheat fields → Topsoil accumulated over millennia was exposed
World War I drove wheat prices up → Cultivated area expanded further
The 1930s brought severe drought → Crops died, topsoil lay bare
→ Topsoil blown away by wind, creating massive dust storms
→ Skies turned dark, dust reached the East Coast
→ Millions lost their land and fled west
Scale of the Dust Bowl: Area affected: ~40 million hectares (larger than Japan's total land area) Topsoil lost: estimated billions of tons People displaced: over 2.5 million Duration: ~10 years (1930–1940) Cause: Unplanned plowing of grasslands
Grasslands were ecosystems built over millennia by grasses and large herbivores. One generation stripped away the topsoil.
And America did not learn from the Dust Bowl.
Instead of restoring topsoil → Compensated with chemical fertilizer
Instead of regenerating soil → Pumped irrigation water
Instead of restoring ecosystems → Killed pests with chemicals
→ The Ogallala Aquifer heads toward depletion
→ Topsoil loss continues
→ The same mistake repeated by different means
Punjab — The "Green Revolution" Killed the Soil
The 1960s. India faced famine. The Green Revolution saved India — so the story goes.
High-yield varieties, chemical fertilizer, pesticides, irrigation. Punjab became India's breadbasket. Food production soared.
But look at the reality 50 years later.
Massive chemical fertilizer → Soil microbes dead → Soil reduced to "dead growing medium"
Massive pesticide spraying → Groundwater contaminated → Cancer rates soaring
Irrigation dependency → Water table dropping 1+ meter per year
Monoculture (wheat-rice rotation) → Soil nutrients depleted unevenly
Stubble burning → Air pollution → Smoke reaches Delhi
The true cost of the "Green Revolution": Punjab's farmer suicide rate is the highest in India. Buried in debt, buying ever more fertilizer and pesticides, watching yields fall as soil dies, increasing inputs further, debt spiraling, unable to repay, taking their own lives. This is the reality of the "Green Revolution" after 50 years.
The Dust Bowl and Punjab share the same structure. Great power pursued "efficiency," ignored nature's cycles, and killed the soil.
The Nazi Tragedy — Power Turns Humans Into Resources
This is not only about soil. Great power treats human beings themselves as resources.
Power concentrated in a single leader
→ Dissent eliminated (book burning, repression, informant networks)
→ "Efficiency" pursued (sorting humans, eliminating the "unnecessary")
→ Industrialized killing (concentration camps, gas chambers, rail transport at scale)
→ 6 million Jews murdered
→ Plus disabled, Roma, political prisoners, homosexuals — millions more
What the Nazis proved: When power concentrates, humans are classified as "resources" or "waste." "Efficient" killing is organized as an industry. A massive bureaucracy converts individual human beings into numbers on paper. And everyone says, "I was just following orders." Concentration of power erases humanity.
The Nazi war machine ran on fossil resources. Tanks, aircraft, submarines — none operate without oil. Great power and fossil resources were linked from the very beginning.
The Soviet Tragedy — Central Planning Kills Agriculture
Stalin ordered agricultural collectivization (1929)
→ All private farmland seized, merged into kolkhozes (collective farms)
→ Farmers' knowledge and autonomy completely eliminated
→ Bureaucrats in Moscow decided what to plant and when
→ People who had never seen a field "planned" agriculture
→ Mass famine struck Ukraine (Holodomor)
→ An estimated 4–7 million people starved to death
Ukraine was called "the breadbasket of Europe" — some of the most fertile land on Earth. World-class chernozem (black soil) stretched across the country. On that land, people starved.
The structure of the Holodomor: The land was fertile. The farmers were capable. But central power seized the land from the farmers, seized autonomy from the farmers, seized grain from the farmers. Food existed — Moscow requisitioned it. People were not killed by food shortage. They were killed by power.
Then came the Lysenko affair.
Trofim Lysenko → An "agricultural scientist" who pleased Stalin
Rejected Mendelian genetics → Claimed "environment changes traits"
Won Stalin's backing → Dominated Soviet agricultural science
Geneticists who disagreed were imprisoned or executed → Scientific criticism silenced
Lysenko's methods forced on the entire nation → Agricultural productivity collapsed
Soviet biology was set back 30 years
Lysenko was a "researcher." But not a practitioner in the field — a desk worker who courted power. Researchers close to power are more dangerous than practitioners.
Putin's Tragedy — Fossil Resources Create Dictators
Vladimir Putin. Over 20 years in power.
Putin's power base is fossil resources.
Russia is one of the world's largest oil and gas exporters
→ Fossil fuel export revenue makes up a massive share of GDP
→ That revenue funds the military, feeds the bureaucracy, suppresses opposition
→ Europe was dependent on Russian natural gas
→ Fossil resources finance dictatorship
In 2022, Putin invaded Ukraine.
Fossil fuel revenue → Maintains military power
Military power → Territorial ambitions
→ Full-scale invasion ordered
→ Tens of thousands of Russian soldiers killed
→ Tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilians killed
→ Ukrainian farmland and infrastructure destroyed
→ Global food and energy prices spike
→ One dictator's decision created a tragedy engulfing the world
Putin and the Holodomor — the parallel: Stalin stole Ukraine's grain and created famine. Putin destroys Ukraine's farmland with missiles. Ninety years apart, what great power does to Ukraine is the same. Destroy the breadbasket of Europe.
But as Chapter 4 showed, drones + AI are neutralizing large weapons. When fossil resources deplete, Putin's funding disappears. When the fossil era ends, dictatorships funded by fossil resources end too.
The "Taxes" Disappear — NVIDIA, Oracle, Microsoft, SIers
Great power is not only national. Giant corporations also levy taxes through power.
NVIDIA from Chapter 7. Oracle, Microsoft, and SIers from Chapter 8. These companies have collected "taxes" through technological lock-in.
NVIDIA tax → CUDA lock-in monopolized the GPU market → Collapses as AI investment stalls (Ch. 7)
Oracle tax → Database licenses held companies captive → PostgreSQL + Claude liberates them (Ch. 8)
Microsoft tax → Triple taxation via Office/Windows/Azure → Claude replaces it (Ch. 8)
SIer tax → Selling person-hours under the name of "system development" → Claude eliminates person-hours (Ch. 8)
Cloud tax → Monthly fees to AWS/Azure/GCP → Your own Linux server + Claude development is sufficient
Salesforce tax → Monthly subscription under the name of CRM → Claude + custom development makes it unnecessary
Consulting tax → Premium fees under the name of "strategy" → Claude replaces structural analysis
The common structure of these "taxes": Create lock-in through technology or brand → Keep customers unable to leave → Charge above actual value → That becomes "market price" This is a power structure. Just as the Nazis stripped citizens of freedom, these corporations stripped customers of choice.
But Claude is breaking this structure.
Database → Build and operate with PostgreSQL + Claude → Oracle tax: zero
Office software → Claude generates documents, spreadsheets, presentations → Microsoft tax: zero
System development → Claude writes the code → SIer tax: zero
Cloud → Your own Linux server + Claude development is sufficient → Cloud tax: zero
CRM → Claude designs and builds it → Salesforce tax: zero
Management consulting → Claude does structural analysis → Consulting tax: zero
GPU → AI investment stalls + competitors enter → NVIDIA tax collapses
Corporate "taxes" share the same structure as state "taxes." Lock-in prevents escape, choice is eliminated, payment exceeds value. AI is collapsing that structure from the foundation.
AI Exposes the Lies
One more thing great power has maintained — lies.
Power is maintained by hiding the truth. Falsifying history, manipulating statistics, suppressing reporting, destroying evidence. Until now, exposing lies required massive organizations. Investigative journalism teams, whistleblower protection agencies, international tribunals.
AI changes that structure.
11.5 million internal documents leaked from a Panamanian law firm
→ Tax haven usage by politicians and the wealthy worldwide exposed
→ Iceland's prime minister resigned, investigations launched globally
But: analysis took hundreds of journalists over a year
Claude could do the same work in hours
Defeat device software used in diesel emissions testing
→ Emissions reduced only during testing; real-world NOx up to 40x the legal limit
→ Years to discover, enormous investigation costs
→ 11 million vehicles affected, fines exceeding $30 billion
AI comparing ECU data with test conditions would detect the fraud instantly
Major banks systematically manipulated the global interest rate benchmark
→ Trillions of dollars in financial products mispriced
→ Barclays, UBS, Deutsche Bank and other major institutions involved
→ Years to discover, billions in fines
AI analyzing interest rate data patterns would see the anomaly from day one
What AI changes: Exposing lies once required organizational power rivaling that of the powerful. Newspaper investigative units, government auditors, international investigation teams. But AI gives that capability to individuals. Public data analysis, document contradiction detection, pattern anomaly discovery — 1 person + Claude equals the analytical power of a major investigation team. The cost for power to maintain its lies has risen dramatically.
Epstein — AI Shines Light Into the Deepest Darkness
Jeffrey Epstein. Arrested for sexual exploitation of minors. "Suicided" in detention in 2019.
But the real problem is not Epstein the individual.
Enormous wealth (origin unclear) → Access to the powerful
A private island → A place to isolate evidence
Exploitation of girls → Drawing in the powerful → Sealing lips through "complicity"
Politicians, business leaders, royalty, scientists → Absorbed into the network
→ No one can expose it. Exposing it would destroy themselves too
→ The power network structurally protects the crime
Why it remains unsolved: Parts of the associate list have been released. But the full picture remains unknown. Investigators are constrained by power. Media is constrained by advertisers. Politicians are constrained by campaign funding. The power network structurally prevents the truth from emerging.
But AI has no such constraints.
Published court documents → Read in full, extract all associates
Flight logs (the Lolita Express) → Chronological analysis of passengers
Money flows → Track corporate and foundation connections from public records
Witness testimony → Automatically detect contradictions
Media timeline → Analyze periods of non-coverage and why
→ 1 person + Claude can perform the analysis of dozens of investigative journalists
The Panama Papers took hundreds of people a year. The Volkswagen fraud took years to uncover. LIBOR manipulation went unnoticed for years.
Epstein's darkness runs far deeper than any of these. But even with publicly available information alone, structural analysis is possible. What is needed is not a massive organization. It is 1 person + AI.
Great power protects crime and conceals truth. The ones who will unravel it are no longer insiders. They are outsiders with AI.
Carney's Declaration — "It's Time to Take Down the Sign"
In 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Carney gave a speech in New York. He declared the end of the post-Cold War rules-based international order, citing Czech dissident Václav Havel's "The Power of the Powerless."
Havel's greengrocer metaphor: Every morning, the greengrocer places a sign in his window: "Workers of the world, unite!" No one believes it. The greengrocer himself doesn't believe it. But because everyone keeps displaying the sign, the system is maintained. Not by violence, but by continued participation in the lie. The moment one person takes down the sign, the illusion begins to crumble.
This is what Carney said —
"The rules-based international order" was a pleasant fiction. An order where the most powerful conveniently exempted themselves. We kept displaying the sign. It no longer works. It's time to take it down.
Economic integration was mutual benefit → The great powers turned it into a weapon
→ Tariffs used as threats, financial infrastructure used as coercion, supply chains exploited as vulnerabilities
→ The moment integration became a source of subordination, we cannot live inside the lie of "mutual benefit"
→ Middle powers must build strategic autonomy
→ In energy, food, critical minerals, finance, and supply chains — all of them
Carney's "values-based realism": Nostalgia is not a strategy. The old order is not coming back. But simply building higher walls is not the answer either. A fortress world is poorer, more fragile, and more unsustainable. Build self-reliance while partnering with like-minded nations. If you're not at the table, you're on the menu. Great powers can act alone. Middle powers cannot. But together, they can forge a third path.
This is exactly the same as the IT structural analysis.
| IT | Nation-States |
|---|---|
| Microsoft dependency | Economic integration dependency on great powers |
| Copilot's backdoor | Weaponization of economic integration |
| WordPress monoculture | The fiction of the rules-based international order |
| Static HTML + own server | Strategic autonomy (energy, food, minerals) |
| Loosely coupled design | Flexible multilateral partnerships |
| Taking down the sign | Breaking free from dependency |
Convenience → dependency → monopoly → collapse. In IT, in agriculture, in the international order — the structure is the same.
Nature has the power to recover, even after being destroyed.
So do humans.
Take down the sign.
Break free from dependency.
Build things that are small, self-reliant, and capable of growing.
